Although RIM’s third quarter numbers aren’t being released for another 3 days, Canalys’ shipping data has revealed that the iPhone has already beaten Windows Mobile’s market share in North America, but BlackBerry still holds on to the top dog status. The iPhone’s 27% capture of the smartphone market is especially surprising considering it’s still not in Canada or Mexico, and is limited to only AT&T. While North America’s a huge market, it’s a big world, and if the numbers included international results, the picture would look just a little different. It’ll be interesting to see what Q4 looks like after the Christmas sales have all been tallied up…

Given that the iPhone is primarily a consumer device and there are no discounts given on the iPhone nor bulk corporate/enterprise purchases available. It pretty much handed every other smartphone manufacturer their lunch.

[...] Stando ai risultati di una ricerca condotta da Canalys per Symbian, iPhone ha superato come quota di mercato (Q3 in Nord America) Windows Mobile, Symbian, Palm e Lnux; ma non BlackBerry. Per essere precisi le quote di mercato nord americano sono spartite per il 25% per WM, 27% iPhone, 30% Blackberry. Il restante 18% viene invece diviso tra Linux, Palm e Symbian. Nonostante se ne faccia un gran parlare, iPhone a superato tutti tranne BlackBerry. Le considerazioni da fare sono molte, in primis da non sottovalutare che i due dispositivi che si contendono la leadership del mercato nascono con logiche e fini totalmente diversi, praticamente opposti, le caratteristiche tecniche sono diverse perchè diversi sono gli utenti a cui è destinato. Grande vociferare anche sui futuri BlackBerry, vi ricorderete qualche tempo fa quando un po di rumors sulla serie 9xxx e su probabili BlackBerry keybordless, inevitabili scimmiottature di un dispositivo, iPhone, che per quanto se ne possa dire detta legge in fatto di desisgn; ma riusciremmo adesso a vivere senza mail push? Are these unit or $ sales? If the former it’s less surprising considering the price of the Iphone.
